Light:
full direct sun every single day. she was made for it. the more sun the better, a sunny garden or south facing balcony is ideal.
Water:
water deeply once every 2 to 3 weeks in summer, once a month or less in winter. she stores water in her pads and overwatering is the only real way to lose her. when in doubt, skip the watering.
make sure the pot or soil has excellent drainage.
Soil:
well draining sandy or cactus mix soil is essential. she will not tolerate heavy or water retaining soil.

the fruit of this cactus is the تين شوكي (prickly pear fruit) sold across Egypt every summer. the same plant, grown large enough, produces the fruit you've eaten your whole life.

Opuntia ficus-indica

a sunny garden bed is where she'll thrive most and grow to her full potential over the years. a large pot on a south or west facing balcony with full sun exposure works well too. she needs space as she matures so give her room. not suitable for indoors.
