The Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is associated with Christmas due to a Mexican legend and its flowering cycle that coincides with the holiday season. The plant is native to Mexico, where it is known as "La Flor de Nochebuena," meaning "The Christmas Eve Flower."

Legend of the Poinsettia: According to Mexican folklore, a young girl named Pepita was saddened because she had no gift to present to the baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve service. An angel appeared and inspired her to gather weeds from the roadside. When she placed the humble bouquet at the nativity scene, the weeds miraculously transformed into vibrant red flowers – the Poinsettias we know today. This legend contributed to the Poinsettia's association with Christmas and gift-giving.

General Facts

Poinsettias are named after Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the United States in the early 19th century. The vibrant red "petals" are actually modified leaves called bracts.
